The Bald Cypress (like the Japanese Larch and the Dawn Redwood) is an unusual tree in that it is a deciduous conifer, which is a tree that bears cones, but loses its needles in winter.  Most trees of this kind are native to East Asia.  The redwoods and the bald cypresses are the only species native to North America.  In nature, the bald cypress are found mostly in the south eastern United States and Mexico.   The common name "Bald Cypress" was given to them because of their deciduous character, which is very unusual in conifers.  The common bald cypress (Taxodium Distichum) forms dense forests in the southeastern swamplands and is a commonly found in the Everglades.   In swampy areas, they produces growths called "knees" which project upward from the root system. The knees grow above the high water line so that the roots can get air while they are below water.
